Golden Polka Dot Nails {Nail Art Tutorial}

Polka Dot Nail Art

For my very first nail art tutorial, I’m going to show you a simple Polka Dot Tutorial you can do on any length of nail, of course the longer the nail the more polka dots you can do.

For the longest time I had really short nails, I admit I used to be a bitter, so I never really painted my nails. For the last year my short nails have been growing and I am so happy to finally be able to buy nail polish and paint my nails. My nails are not long by any standards, but they are mine and I LOVE them!!

For this tutorial you will need:

  • 2 Nail Polishes in your choice of colors (I used Julep Maven colors Felicity and Alfre)
  • A tool with a point or rounded tip, this is a great set for doing all sorts of designs on your nails (Dotting 5 X 2 Way Marbleizing Dotting Pen Set )
  • You will also want to have a piece of plastic or a sandwich bag on hand.

What you will need

First you will want to paint your nails in your desired base color, I chose Alfre for the base since I love all purple nail polishes! Apply up to two coats depending on how dark you want your base color.

Now comes the fun part. After your base color is dry (I love that the Julep nail polish dries pretty fast) you will get your second color and either dump a little out onto the plastic bag or take your brush from the polish and make yourself a little puddle on the bag. You will need to work quickly for this part, especially if you are using fast drying nail polish.

Take your dotting tool ( you can also use a toothpick, mechanical pencil tip, or anything that will give you the size dots you want) and dip and swirl it in your polish puddle. Now you will want to apply the tool to your nail, if you want small dots use light pressure and one quick touch to the nail. If you are like me and would prefer to have fewer, bigger dots just apply more polish to your tool and dab it on the nail.

Make sure to take some nail polish remover and a q-tip to clean up any accidental spots on your skin, then apply a clear topcoat once your nails are dry and you are good to go!

    • It really is simple, and the more you practice this and other techniques the easier it gets! Just buy some cheap fake nails from the store and practice on them!

  2. I can do artsy/craftsy things, but I am absolutely HORRIBLE when it comes to doing nails! My six year old daughter does nails better then I can! haha. Yours look great!

    • Thanks! It took me forever to get the nerve to do them on myself. I’m great at doing other people’s nails, my own usually turn out horrible!

  3. I like to do nail art on fake nails! I think I have the same dotters you so. I just practice doing tiny dots yesterday actually!
    Very cute!
