Book Review:Delirium by Lauren Oliver

DeliriumTitle:  Delirium
Author: Lauren Oliver
Series: Delirium #1
Publisher:  HarperTeen
Date: 2/1/2011
Pages: 440
ISBN: 9780061726828
Source: NetGalley
Purchase: Delirium (Delirium - Trilogy)

Summary: Before scientists found the cure, people thought love was a good thing. They didn't understand that once love - the deliria - blooms in your blood, there is no escaping its hold. Things are different now. Scientists are able to eradicate love, and the governments demands that all citizens receive the cure upon turning eighteen. Lena Holoway has always looked forward to the day when she’ll be cured. A life without love is a life without pain: safe, measured, predictable, and happy.

But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena does the unthinkable: She falls in love. (Goodreads)

My Rating:

Let me just say YA Dystopia is fast becoming my favorite genre to read. I had previously read a couple of reviews of Delirium, and was a little skeptical at first, although the reviews were of course glowing. I  read the first couple of chapters and was hooked.
Lena is so easy to connect to for me. Her friendship with Hana, and her upset over her mother's "death" are easily identifiable. Delirium introduces us to a world where LOVE is a disease, and at a certain age everyone must have a procedure to be "cured". The book was a little slow for me, but I couldn't give up on it, once Alex; in all his gloriousness was introduced I knew that i was in for an epic love story.
I teared up when I learned that he was technically and " invalid" and when Lena ran from him I was heartbroken. I had to keep reading to find out if she went looking for him. The chapter where she went searching for him was a nail bitter for me, until she found him, and then of course I was in love with him even more from that moment on.
When Lena finds out that her mother may be alive, I was almost as nervous as her, that is until they arrive at the "Crypts". I just knew that something was wrong. But hopefully there is a happy ending with that story.
After Lena is busted and almost forced to have the procedure to cure her of Amor Deliria Nervousa ( what they call the disease love), I was praying and screaming at the book for Alex to show up and rescue her.
The ending of the book had me crying, actually I was crying throughout the last two chapters.  I am hoping that the next book of this projected trilogy is out soon, and that Alex will be in the next one.
Overall, I loved the book, the characters and Lauren Oliver's writing style. This is one book that I will pick up often.

ARC Tour review: Fallen Angel by Heather Terrell

Fallen AngelTitle: Fallen Angel
Author: Heather Terrell
Series: Fallen Angel #1
Publisher: HarperTeen
Date: December 28, 2010
Pages: 310
ISBN: 9780061965708
Source:  Good Golly Miss Holly ARC Tour
Purchase: Fallen Angel

 Summary: Heaven-sent?

Ellie was never particularly good at talking to boys—or anyone other than her best friend and fellow outcast, Ruth. Then she met Michael.

Michael is handsome, charming, sweet. And totally into Ellie. It’s no wonder she is instantly drawn to him. But Michael has a secret. And he knows Ellie is hiding something, too. They’ve both discovered they have powers beyond their imagining. Powers that are otherworldly.

Ellie and Michael are determined to uncover what they are, and how they got this way . . . together. But the truth has repercussions neither could have imagined. Soon they find themselves center stage in an ancient conflict that threatens to destroy everything they love. And it is no longer clear whether Ellie and Michael will choose the same side.

In this electrifying novel, Heather Terrell spins a gripping supernatural tale about true love, destiny, and the battle of good versus evil. (Goodreads)

My Rating:

My Review:  I gave Fallen Angel 5 moons because i LOVE the story!! I have read about vampires, werewolves, zombies, and all manner of other supernatural beings, but never have I read a story based solely on Angels. I read Hush, Hush and loved the story of a fallen angel, but Heather Terrell has brought out a whole new look on Fallen Angel. We have Ellspeth "Ellie" and Michael as our " fallen Angels" although from the beginning you are left wondering exactly what they are and why Ellie can't remember meeting Micheal 3 years ago on a trip with her parents.
You are left wondering throughout the book if the two will ever figure things out. From flying to blood lust, you will wonder along with Michael and Ellie if they actually are vampires. There are a few supporting characters, and I disliked Missy right along with Ellie, but learned to love Ruth as the support that Ellie needed even if she didn't see it for a little bit in the book. When Zeke makes himself known to Ellie and Michael, you have to wonder who is telling the truth to Ellie, her parents; who may not really be her parents; or Zeke. And if she believes one over the other, where will her path take her; good or bad?
The blurb/ summary of the book lets the reader know that there will be a battle between good and evil, but there really is only one small " battle" in the book and that is more towards the end. without giving away too much more of the book, know that in the end good prevails. Hopefully Eternity, the second book in the series will answer all the lingering questions and give us more insight into what exactly the purpose of Michael and Ellie is.
Fallen Angel is a definite must read for lovers of Hush, Hush and Evermore. Heather Terrell prevails in her writing and storytelling.
