Chocolate Strawberry Trifle...Our Christmas Desert

Chocolate Strawberry Trifle

Almost every year we end up having a ton of pies for after Christmas dinner. This year I wanted to try something different, so I went searching for something that everyone would like and was easy to make the night before. I came across the Chocolate Strawberry Trifle. It seemed easy enough, and I knew that everyone in the family would be able to eat it. We are a strawberry loving family and even though it wasn't strawberry season our local grocer had some amazing looking strawberries. After getting all the ingredients home, it was simple enough to mix up the cake mix and pop it in the oven. I couldn't get the strawberries cut up fast enough for the kids, they were grabbing and running before I even got them washed off.

For the off season the strawberries were extremely fresh and while they were sweet there was a tang that you can only get with really good strawberries. I purchased two of everything while at the store because I figured that I would need to make two, but instead I ended up having to use an extra half carton of the strawberry glaze for just the first trifle. I ran onto one other issue, and that was with my "trifle" bowl; I was using a cake dome that you flip over and it makes a punch bowl, so all of my goodies wanted to slide to the middle and I had a heck of a time with the first two layers.

After those first two layers were set properly, I had the kids in to help finish, since everything was pre-cut and thawed it was a very quick layering affair. I had to fight off little hands once everything was finished, they wanted to taste it right away. I put it in the refrigerator and threatened little fingers with no cookies after dinner just to make sure the trifle would be safe overnight. Before heading out for Christmas dinner, I took about a 1/2 cup of the left over chocolate frosting and melted it down, then ran it along the top of the trifle along with the chocolate shavings, though you could do all this when you make it, I wanted the shavings to be fresh and not soggy.

This looks amazing, and by changing the chocolate cake mix I can make this for my family. It might be a great item to add to my holiday baking.
