Etsy Spotlight Artist: Studio Piluca

08 October 2010

If I hadn't made Quinten's invitations for his party next weekend, I would have so ordered some from this wonderful etsy shop!! All of the invitations are darling and you can even design your own!!

Where are you from? Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a wife and mother of 4 wonderful children. I am the soul behind Studio Piluca, a small invitation design, print and gift shop in Lynn, Massachusetts.

How did you decide on your shop name?

Piluca was a name given to me by an Ecuadorian friend when I lived in NYC. He was a lot older than me and told me about a cartoon character he use to watch as a kid named Wendy Piluca. The name stuck and I decided to use it for my AOL account. Many of my friends today are old AOL buddies and they never knew me by my real name. So when it came time to name my business I wanted something personal, but I didn't want to use my name so I stuck with what worked. Studio Piluca was born.

Why did you start your business?

For years I had dreamed of designing a paper goods line. Stationery was something I was always attracted to as a child. After 3 children and a string of dead-end jobs, I decided to go back to school and got a certificate in Digital Graphic Design. My first job out of college was at a print shop where I learned all about production and different papers. All my stationery ideas started popping back up in my head and one thing lead to the other: I ended up buying a bunch of equipment with my first tax return money and registered my business at City Hall.

What or who inspires you?

Nature is my biggest design teacher. Everything in nature is perfect. Every color matches those around it, every design is unique and interesting. And it is THE most diverse thing in this universe. Nature never runs out of new and interesting ideas.

What do you like about being a seller?

I love placing finished goods in an envelope and adding the buyers name to it. The idea that something I made is leaving my house and going to a total strangers home that thought it was worth spending their money on it just fills me with immense joy.

What’s your supply addiction; is there a specific color or type of supply you just can’t pass up?

I'm secretly addicted to paper punches. They are just so useful. They come in all shapes and sizes and they transform any piece of paper into confetti. My kids love them too. I've got a bunch of them and oddly enough never use them in my designs.

What do you do when you’re not being an artist? What activities do you enjoy?

Apart from all my mommy duties I am very active in my church. I am part of the translation ministry (translating from Spanish to English) which I really love. I also enjoy dancing very much. I do it all day all around my house, while I clean, while I cook. I break into song and dance when I'm telling my kids something. I have even trained them to turn anything they want to tell me into a song. My husband thinks I'm crazy, but secretly he loves it. I really love to read and sometimes I try writing.

I enjoy making the custom notebooks the most. I love making items that are useful and will look pretty at the same time. I call it functional beauty.
